A section of the promenade between the junction of Lytham Road and Chapel Street has been closed, and the tram service along the promenade has also been shut. It is reported that the severity of it was such that the breathing apparatus of one firefighter was smouldering and started to burn as he searched the building.
Fire crews remained at scene on Monday but a spokesperson said the fire was under control. Sixty people were evacuated from neighbouring hotels and taken to safety in a nearby leisure centre.
