A 42-year-old man who died after an assault in Londonderry appears to have been the victim of an unprovoked attack, the police have said. A 42-year-old man who died after an assault in Londonderry had just arrived home from a family wedding.
He sustained head injuries after being attacked outside his home in Moyola Drive at 0300 BST and died in hospital. Jim McFadden was attacked outside his home in Moyola Drive in the Shantallow area at about 0300 BST. He suffered head injuries and died in hospital.
His 15-year-old daughter sustained facial injuries in the assault and a 16-year-old boy had his arm broken. A gang beat the father of four with sticks and bats in front of his children. Police have launched a murder inquiry and arrested three people.
Police said sticks or baseball bats may have been used in the attack. Three people have been arrested. His 15-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old boy were also injured.
Detectives have appealed for information and said they are keen to speak to a taxi driver who was in the area and contacted them. They are still investigaing a motive for the attack. The girl suffered facial injuries and the boy a broken arm.
Mr McFadden appeared to have been the victim of an unprovoked attack, the police said.
His children, aged between 10 and 16, witnessed the assault.
The local priest said the victim was a handyman and was known as "wee Jimmy".
Father Eamon Graham said: "They (the family) are coping well at the minute, but it's very early days.
"I don't think anybody has fully realised what has happened and there's a long, hard road ahead.
"They're very good people, there's great support and there's a very strong community and family support, but that doesn't fill the missing place at the head of the table."
Detectives have appealed for information and said they are keen to speak to a taxi driver who was in the area and contacted them.
