(about 1 hour later) | |
Two men suffered life-threatening injuries and three more people were seriously hurt when one bus crashed into the back of another in the centre of Brighton on Monday morning.
Police declared a major incident as firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene on North Street, near the city’s Jubilee Clock Tower, after the buses collided at the end of the rush hour.
Two men had to be cut from the wreckage. They were among seven taken to Royal Sussex County hospital. Six more were taken to Princess Royal hospital in Haywards Heath. Three were described as having suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver of one of the buses, who was earlier said to be trapped in the wreckage, is believed to be one of the two men with life-threatening injuries. Up to 10 more people were treated at the scene.
Traffic was diverted around the scene of the accident, in one of Brighton’s busiest shopping areas, after the crash at 9.22am. Five fire crews were deployed, including firefighters from the technical rescue unit.
A triage centre was set up on North Street and a walk-in centre for anyone less badly hurt was set up on nearby Queen’s Road, close to Brighton railway station.
An ambulance service spokesman said there were seven ambulances at the scene, as well as a number of paramedic cars and the air ambulance.
The spokesman said the service had deployed its hazardous area response team, which includes paramedics trained to work in difficult environments such as confined spaces.
“In total we have taken seven patients to the Royal Sussex County hospital, including the two in a life-threatening condition,” the spokesman said. “A further six with non-life-threatening injuries were taken to Haywards Heath’s Princess Royal hospital. Up to 10 more were treated and discharged at the scene.”

The crash involved two vehicles belonging to Brighton & Hove Buses. The firm’s managing director, Martin Harris, said there would be a full investigation. He said the driver of one of the buses had received “significant injuries” but could not give further details.
At the scene, a road cone could be seen wedged under the front end of the bus that had careered into the other double-decker. The driver’s windscreen of the rear bus had fallen out, and its upstairs windscreen was shattered.

Members of the public were being held behind cordons at either end of North Street as investigators carried out inquiries. Paper towels and granules had been laid on parts of the road to soak up any fuel and oil that may have leaked from the buses. |
