NHS Highland said its policy was to move patients who were awaiting transfer and who met certain criteria to the discharge lounge. A NHS Highland spokeswoman said: "Our information is that a patient was kept on the ward until 3.45pm when they were taken to the discharge lounge and they were picked up by the patient transport vehicle at 4.20pm.
A spokeswoman said: "Those not meeting the criteria are kept on the ward until transport arrives. "We really would like an opportunity to speak to the family to clear up any confusion and learn any lessons."
"The discharge lounge is manned by trained nursing staff and nursing auxiliaries. Refreshments are also made available."
