Nine evacuated as blaze spreads Probe after nine flee from blaze
(about 16 hours later)
Nine people have been evacuated after an early morning caravan fire spread to three houses. An investigation is underway into the cause of an "intense" fire that saw nine people evacuated from four houses.
The fire broke out just after 0500 GMT at Viola Road on the Sandfields estate in Port Talbot. It is thought to have started in a caravan around 0510 GMT and spread to nearby homes on Viola Road on the Sandfields estate in Port Talbot.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service said four crews fought fires on the ground and first floors of two properties affected. Four crews fought the flames, which completely gutted one property, badly damaged the adjoining houses and forced the closure of the road.
The fire, which was described as "intense," set a third property ablaze. There were no reports of any injuries. Police said they were keeping an open mind but have appealed for witnesses.
Mark Griffiths, the officer in charge of the incident, said: "Thanks to the swift response of the firefighters from Port Talbot, Neath and Morriston, we were able to prevent further damage to adjoining properties." Mark Griffiths of the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the nine people told to leave their homes were dispersed to friends and family.
The fire service said it would not be evacuating any more streets. He said it was thanks to a smoke alarm that they had been able to get out alive.
A joint investigation into the cause of the blaze is being carried out by the fire service and South Wales Police. "Thanks to the swift response of the firefighters from Port Talbot, Neath and Morriston, we were able to prevent further damage to adjoining properties," he added.
