The students were based at Craven College in Skipton, North Yorkshire.

The cavers were given routine medical checks by doctors and paramedics when they were brought to the surface. A police spokesman said: "All 11 of the students - aged between 17 and 20 - and the two remaining adult leaders had been safely removed from the cave by 6.50pm. None of them were injured."

Mr Blackwell said: "I was notified immediately by my staff and was reassured that they had taken the students to an area of the cave which never floods and offered a safe haven.
"They kept the students in this safe area until the rescue services arrived."
