England set to name autumn squad Seven new caps in England squad
(1 day later)
England coach Andy Robinson will unveil a 30-man squad on Wednesday for next month's four Twickenham internationals. England coach Andy Robinson has named seven uncapped players in a 30-man squad for the international against New Zealand at Twickenham on 5 November.
No player will play all four Tests, so Robinson is set to name two different captains, expected to be Martin Corry and Pat Sanderson. Gloucester backs Anthony Allen and Olly Morgan and Wasps pair Tom Rees and Paul Sackey are all called up.
Corry led the side last season before missing the summer tour to Australia, where Sanderson took over. They are joined by Sale prop Stuart Turner, Newcastle fly-half Toby Flood and Bristol scrum-half Shaun Perry.
Gloucester centre Anthony Allen and Newcastle fly-half Toby Flood are among the youngsters pushing for places. The captaincy announcement will be made on Monday when Robinson will name his starting line-up.
Allen, 20, is a candidate to fill the problematic inside centre slot in the absence of the injured Olly Barkley and Stuart Abbott, although veteran Mike Catt remains in the elite squad. After New Zealand and Argentina, England play two Tests against 2007 World Cup pool rivals South Africa.
Flood could also come into contention as back-up to first-choice fly-half Charlie Hodgson with Jonny Wilkinson still out, unless the talented Ryan Lamb wins a rapid promotion. "The squad includes a good mix of experience and also gives an opportunity for some of the newcomers to the elite squad to push further their claims for a starting place at some point during the four Test matches," said Robinson.
Wing James Simpson-Daniel and lock Steve Borthwick are also on the injured list, while centre Mike Tindall has only appeared once as a replacement for Gloucester this season. 606: DEBATE class="" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A16649058">I think that's a reasonable selection, I'm sure Vickery and Thompson will be added at some stage ES class="" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugby_union/606/default.stm">606: Have your say
In his absence, Newcastle pair Jamie Noon and Mathew Tait could provide the centre pairing for the opening Test against New Zealand a week on Sunday, 5 November. "I will amend and add to the squad for the Argentina game to ensure that no player starts more than three of the four games."
Josh Lewsey and Mark Cueto are both likely to start in the back three after injuries suffered last weekend proved not to be serious. Flood, who has scored 36 points in his seven club appearances this season, was delighted with his call-up.
Cueto has fluid around his ankle joint but hopes to be available for Sale's Heineken Cup game against Calvisano on Friday, while Lewsey has also been cleared to return to training after a hamstring twinge. "I'm over the moon. It's every player's dream to represent their country and hopefully I can make the most of my chance," he said.
New Zealand-born prop Perry Freshwater should also be included despite fears he had broken his leg playing for Perpignan against Treviso. The selection of 34-year-old Turner is Robinson's surprise pick, although tighthead cover for Julian White was thin on the ground.
But a scan revealed only heavy bruising and he could even make a full debut against his native country, with Matt Stevens still recovering from shoulder surgery and Phil Vickery only a fortnight into his comeback. There are no places for World Cup winners Phil Vickery, Lawrence Dallaglio, Steve Thompson and Mike Tindall, who recently began their comebacks from injury, or Joe Worsley, Simon Shaw or Mike Catt.
The squad will be scaled down to a match-day 22 next Monday. Injuries have ruled out the likes of Jonny Wilkinson, Steve Borthwick and Olly Barkley.
A week after locking horns with the Tri-Nations champions, England face Argentina before back-to-back Tests against South Africa.
