England trio injury fears lifted England set to name autumn squad
(1 day later)
A scan has revealed that Sale winger Mark Cueto has no major damage after hurting his ankle against the Ospreys. England coach Andy Robinson will unveil a 30-man squad on Wednesday for next month's four Twickenham internationals.
Cueto's England hopes looked slim when he was forced off during Friday's defeat but he has recovered quickly. No player will play all four Tests, so Robinson is set to name two different captains, expected to be Martin Corry and Pat Sanderson.
Wasps back Josh Lewsey has also been cleared to return to training after a hamstring problem. Corry led the side last season before missing the summer tour to Australia, where Sanderson took over.
And there was further good news for England coach Andy Robinson when it was revealed that prop Perry Freshwater should also be OK for the autumn Tests. Gloucester centre Anthony Allen and Newcastle fly-half Toby Flood are among the youngsters pushing for places.
Robinson is due to name a 30-man squad to face New Zealand next month on Wednesday. Allen, 20, is a candidate to fill the problematic inside centre slot in the absence of the injured Olly Barkley and Stuart Abbott, although veteran Mike Catt remains in the elite squad.
Cueto is now aiming to be fit for Sale's Heineken Cup clash with Calvisano at Edgeley Park on Friday while Lewsey could figure against Perpignan. Flood could also come into contention as back-up to first-choice fly-half Charlie Hodgson with Jonny Wilkinson still out, unless the talented Ryan Lamb wins a rapid promotion.
There were fears that Perpignan prop Freshwater had broken his leg against Treviso but they have been eased after a scan reportedly showed he had suffered only heavy bruising. Wing James Simpson-Daniel and lock Steve Borthwick are also on the injured list, while centre Mike Tindall has only appeared once as a replacement for Gloucester this season.
Freshwater, who was born in New Zealand, is in line to make his full England debut against the All Blacks on 5 November. In his absence, Newcastle pair Jamie Noon and Mathew Tait could provide the centre pairing for the opening Test against New Zealand a week on Sunday, 5 November.
Bath centre Olly Barkley has already been ruled out of the first Test of the autumn because of a fractured bone in his right hand. Josh Lewsey and Mark Cueto are both likely to start in the back three after injuries suffered last weekend proved not to be serious.
And Harlequins' Stuart Abbott will also be missing from the squad with a knee injury. England are also still without the likes of Jonny Wilkinson, James Simpson-Daniel, Steve Thompson and Steve Borthwick. Cueto has fluid around his ankle joint but hopes to be available for Sale's Heineken Cup game against Calvisano on Friday, while Lewsey has also been cleared to return to training after a hamstring twinge.
New Zealand-born prop Perry Freshwater should also be included despite fears he had broken his leg playing for Perpignan against Treviso.
But a scan revealed only heavy bruising and he could even make a full debut against his native country, with Matt Stevens still recovering from shoulder surgery and Phil Vickery only a fortnight into his comeback.
The squad will be scaled down to a match-day 22 next Monday.

Robinson and the England selection panel - which comprises Brian Ashton, Mike Ford, John Wells and new director of elite rugby Rob Andrew - must decide who will captain the side against New Zealand.
Leicester number eight Martin Corry was skipper last season but was rested for the summer tour of Australia, with Worcester's Pat Sanderson taking the reins.
