But the footage went on to show Claude Roulet, the hotel president's assistant, returning to the store shortly afterwards and picking up an item in a bag which he took back to the couple's Imperial Suite.
He is then captured depositing the bag in the hotel's strong room.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Carpenter of the Metropolitan Police, who showed the CCTV footage to the jury, confirmed that a "Dis-moi oui" ring had been recovered from Mr Al-Fayed's flat off the Champs Elysees.
