The 17-year-old had recently started a job at Currys in nearby Seven Kings and was studying for A-levels in accounts, finance and business studies at Newham Sixth Form College. Police are looking for three male black youths aged about 18 years old.
Det Ch Insp Matt Horne said: "What it appears to be is an unprovoked robbery with gratuitous violence that didn't need to be there for the purposes of stealing a phone."
