Crash toddler critical but stable
(about 11 hours later) | |
The condition of a two-year-old boy who was injured when a car plunged into the Newry Canal on Wednesday afternoon is described as critical but stable.
He was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital after the accident.
The car he was travelling in ended up in the canal after it was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the Omeath Road.
Edward Carroll from the Fire and Rescue Service said the three adults in the car managed to get out quickly.
"On our arrival we were told that the car has been underwater for at least five minutes," he said.
"I'm told the adults had rescued themselves and then the child had been taken out.
"The child did come around, but it could have been a nightmare situation for our crews on arrival had the occupants still been in the car."
The boy, who is understood to have had breathing difficulties, was transferred from Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry to the Royal Victoria Hospital after his condition deteriorated.
The three other - the boy's mother and father and a male relative - received treatment for minor injuries after the accident, which took place at about 1430 BST.
