  • Former Tory MP Quentin Davies, who defected to Labour earlier this year has appealed to other Conservatives to "take the plunge" and join Labour. Mr Davies, who is sitting in the conference hall with a group of fellow Tory defectors, said he was proud of his new party and accused David Cameron of "a Faustian pact with his own extremists." In a further attack on Mr Cameron, he accused him of saying and doing "such consistently foolish and superficial and transparently contradictory things."

Janet Kirk, general secretary of the Labour Party disabled members' group, told delegates: "Can I congratulate Gordon Brown for being the first disabled prime minister, long may we have more." Mr Brown, lest we forget, lost an eye in a teenage rugby accident.
