Light aircraft ditches into sea off Jersey Two dead after plane ditches in sea off Jersey
(about 3 hours later)
Wreckage has been found in the search for a light aircraft that ditched into the sea off Jersey. Two people have died after a light aircraft ditched into the sea off Jersey, say police.
A Jersey Airport spokesman said the UK-based American registered Cessna plane ended up in the sea about five miles west of the airport. Officers said the two victims were believed to be UK residents who were travelling from Dinan in France to the Channel Island.
He said two people were believed to be on the plane, which was travelling from Dinan in France to the island. The alarm was raised at 10:00 BST after the UK-based Cessna hit the water about five miles from the airport.
The alarm was raised at about 10:00 BST. Alan Donald, from the Port of Jersey, said the search was continuing. Jersey Police are investigating the crash along with the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB).
The Jersey Airport spokesman said coastal visibility was poor but was better in the area being searched. Heavy fog hampered the rescue mission by the RNLI, Jersey Fire & Rescue Service and Channel Island Air Search.
The search involves both the island's lifeboats, the harbour pilot boat, a French and a British search and rescue helicopter, Channel Islands Air Search and HMS Northumberland, a type 23 frigate that was training in the area.
Private boats and passenger ferries were involved in the early stages of the search but were stood down after about two hours.
Jersey Airport has warned there could be delays to commercial flights.
