A man has died after falling into the water near Portstewart harbour. A man has died after falling into the sea near Portstewart harbour in County Londonderry.
Belfast Coastguard received a call from the Ambulance Service just before 17:00 BST on Tuesday telling them someone had fallen into the sea by Victoria Terrace. It happened while he was fishing at rocks close to Victoria Terrace shortly before 17:00 BST on Tuesday.
The man was recovered from the water by the Portrush inshore lifeboat and taken to Portstewart harbour. Other fishermen did their best to rescue him and a number of emergency teams were called to the scene.
A number of rescue teams were involved in the rescue operation. He was recovered from the water by the Portrush inshore lifeboat and taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.
The Coleraine Coastguard Rescue Team, the RNLI inshore lifeboat from Portrush, Portstewart RNLI beach lifeguards and the Irish Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter from Sligo all attended the scene. Chris Little from Coleraine Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The lifeboat was able to recover him very quickly.
Gary Young, watch manager at Belfast Coastguard, said: "It appears that this man had been fishing from the rocks near Portstewart. "His location had been given very clearly by the person who made the initial call. With sea conditions being very calm, it was quite easy to see.
Chris Little from Coleraine Coastguard Rescue Team was involved in the operation. "Two people who had been fishing near the gentleman had gone to his assistance and managed to hold him against the rocks until the lifeboat crew could recover him.
"The lifeboat was able to recover him very quickly," he said.
"His location had been given very clearly and the person who had given the initial call, with sea conditions being very calm, it was quite easy to see.
