Police said roads in the far west of Dumfries and Galloway around Wigtownshire had been badly affected by drifting snow with up to 10 inches in places.
The A77 between Stranraer and Portpatrick has been closed. All other routes are open but hazardous. Police said there had been a number of minor accidents.
Ten schools have also been closed in Dumfries and Galloway and two in Aberdeenshire. A number of other schools are experiencing problems with pupil transport.
