Three to appear over arson charge Three remanded on arson charges
(about 7 hours later)
Three men are to appear in court in connection with an arson attack in Londonderry. Three Londonderry men have been remanded in custody charged in connection with a weekend arson attack at a house in the city.
The charges relate to a incident where flammable liquid was poured through the letter box of a house in Harty Court, at Ballymagroarty, and set alight. A woman and her 10-year-old son were rescued during the incident.
A woman and her 10-year-old son were woken up by their pet dog and rescued by firefighters early on Saturday. The charges relate to flammable liquid poured through a letter box at Harty Court, Ballymagroarty and set alight.
The men aged 18, 20 and 38 are to appear before the city's magistrates court on Monday. Dane Michael Martin, 18, of Strand Foyer, Ryan Matthew Martin, 20, Barrs Lane and Patrick Daniel Callaghan, 38, no fixed abode, deny the charges.
They are facing charges of arson with intent to endanger life. All three deny arson with intent to endanger life.
The court heard that the alleged injured party awoke after hearing her dog growling and saw smoke coming through the letter box.
Resident Magistrate Barney McElholm said he could not think of "a more heinous act than pouring accelerant through someone's letterbox".
He said he did not believe people who "claimed they did these things to scare".
The magistrate said there was a background to the case and refused bail for all three men.
