Federal officials broke up a cult suspected of running a sex-slavery ring among its followers on the United States border, the authorities said Tuesday. The Defenders of Christ cult is suspected of recruiting women to have sex with a Spanish man who claimed he was the reincarnation of Christ. Followers were subjected to forced labor or sex, according to a victims’ advocacy group. The authorities raided a house this week near Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Tex., and found cult members living in filthy conditions. Fourteen foreigners were detained and turned over to prosecutors. |
