Immigration officials said Tuesday that they had broken up a cult accused of running a sex-slavery ring on the United States border. The National Immigration Institute said 14 foreigners had been detained in the raid on a house near Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Tex. Officials said 10 Mexicans found at the house in filthy conditions were presumably among the victims. The institute said the sect’s leaders called themselves “The Defenders of Christ” and made members of the cult pay quotas with forced labor or sex. Federal officials broke up a cult that allegedly ran a sex-slavery ring among its followers on the United States border, the authorities said Tuesday. The Defenders of Christ cult allegedly recruited women to have sex with a Spanish man who claimed he was the reincarnation of Christ. Followers were subjected to forced labor or sex, according to a victims’ advocacy group. Federal authorities raided a house this week near Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Tex., and found cult members living in filthy conditions. Fourteen foreigners were detained and turned over to prosecutors.
