River Wye crash: Family rescued from water
(about 1 hour later) | |
Two people have been rescued after two cars carrying four members of the same family overturned into a river.
The vehicles crashed into the River Wye next to the A6 in Buxton in Derbyshire just before 09:00 GMT.
A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said the "weather certainly contributed to the incident".
The four casualties - a man, woman and two children - were taken to Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, Greater Manchester for treatment.
The accident happened close to the Topley Pike Quarry and the A6 was closed to traffic while recovery work took place.
Paul Hawker, station manager at Buxton fire station, said they believed both cars had lost control on the same area of snow or ice minutes after each other.
The occupants of one of the cars - the mother and daughter - managed to get out of the water and call for help.
Mr Hawker said two nearby residents and a police officer had got into the water to help rescue the two occupants of the second car until fire crews arrived.
Derbyshire Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
