The emergency services have been called to the prison, and are attempting to assess the exact nature of the package. Inmates housed in accommodation blocks adjacent to the main entrance were evacuated at about 1500 BST.

Residents living near the prison were also prevented from approaching their homes at around 1430 BST, and were told not to return until further notice. "The contents caused some concern after initial examination by prison staff."
He said the package turned out to be "wholly innocent and not even a hoax".
The chief inspector added: "Correct procedures were followed by prison staff and we are pleased there was nothing sinister in the contents."

Robert Paterson, 59, who lives 200 yards from the prison, said: "I came home from shopping and was told by a police officer that I couldn't get through to my house.
