M5 closed in fatal crash in Gloucestershire | |

A lorry driver has died in an accident on the M5 in Gloucestershire which left the road closed throughout the night. | |
The M5 was closed northbound between junctions 10 and 11 after three lorries and two cars crashed at 21:30 GMT. | |
It was believed a Royal Mail lorry was involved in the accident, which police said happened in snowy conditions and amid hail. | |
Chris Gwilliam, who witnessed the aftermath of the accident, said it looked like a "truly horrific" crash. | |
'Lorry jack-knifed' | |
He said: "It looked like it rear-ended another HGV, from what I could see. There were a considerable number of firefighters there. It looked like they were trying to get the driver out." | |
Another witness, Thomas Lydon, said: "There was a Royal Mail lorry that had jack-knifed and the cab was smashed up. Gloucestershire Police said the dead man had been trapped in his vehicle. | |
A spokesman said the northbound carriageway would be closed until about 0800 GMT. | |
In a separate accident, the A40 was closed in both directions between Cheltenham and Burford after two vehicles collided. A male trapped inside one of the vehicles suffered serious injuries. | |
A police spokesman said: "Police received a report of erratic driving at 9.25pm and moments later a blue Vauxhall Astra collided with a white Ford Transit van. | |
"The fire service and ambulance service attended and cut a man out of one of the vehicles. The drivers of both vehicles have injuries that are not believed to be life | |
threatening at this time." | |
