M5 closed in Gloucestershire as snow blamed for fatal crash
(about 1 hour later) | |
A lorry driver died in an accident on the M5 in Gloucestershire as snow and hail were blamed for a series of crashes.
The M5 was closed northbound near Cheltenham and partially closed southbound between junctions 10 and 11.
A Royal Mail lorry and two vehicles crashed northbound at 21:40 GMT. Police confirmed a lorry driver was dead.
A vehicle travelling south crashed at about the same time, while the A40 has been closed after another crash.
'Truly horrific' | |
Gloucestershire Police said the man fatally injured in the M5 northbound crash had been trapped in the vehicle.
A spokesman said the northbound carriageway would be closed for "some time". The southbound carriageway was later re-opened.
Chris Gwilliam, who witnessed the aftermath of the two M5 accidents, said: "The accident involving a Royal Mail truck looked like a truly horrific crash.
"It looked like it rear-ended another HGV, from what I could see. There were a considerable number of firefighters there. It looked like they were trying to get the driver out."
Another witness, Thomas Lydon, said: "There was a Royal Mail lorry that had jack-knifed and the cab was smashed up. There were many firefighters working on it."
The A40 was closed in both directions between Cheltenham and Burford after two vehicles collided. A male trapped inside one of the vehicles suffered serious injuries.
