Two men have been charged with conspiring to murder members of the security forces following the discovery of a live mortar bomb in County Armagh. Two County Armagh men have appeared in court charged with conspiring to murder members of the security forces.
The men, aged 22 and 23, were also charged with possessing an improvised explosive device and possession of articles of use to terrorists. They are Gary Toman, 22, of Drumnamoe Avenue in Lurgan, and 23-year-old Damien McKenna of Dean's Walk, also in the town.
They were arrested in Lurgan on Monday following the discovery of the mortar and a firing tube on 5 April. They are also charged with possession of a mortar.
The pair are expected to appear before magistrates at Craigavon. In addition, they face charges of possession of items which could be useful to terrorists, including a circuit tester, pliers and batteries.
The mortar and firing tube, which were discovered near the Cornakinniger Road - close to where the main Belfast-Dublin railway line passes through the town, were removed by army technical officers. They were arrested on Monday in connection with the discovery of a horizontal mortar at Cornakinnegar Road, Lurgan, on 5 April.
They were remanded in custody to appear again on 10 May.
