Police in Edinburgh have launched an inquiry after a 39-year-old man was shot in the early hours. The shooting of an Edinburgh dog walker is being treated as attempted murder but the motive remains a mystery, police have told BBC Scotland.
The man, who was walking his dog about 0040 BST in the Paisley Drive area of the city, raised the alarm himself. The 39-year-old man was in his garden in Paisley Drive at about 0040 BST after returning from his walk when he was hit by a gunshot to his waist.
He is not thought to be suffering life-threatening injuries and is being treated in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The man, named locally as Douglas Downing, raised the alarm and is being treated in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Detectives, who are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area, have appealed for witnesses or other dog walkers to come forward. Det Supt Allan Jones said the gunman had "lethal intent" and used a shotgun.
Det Insp George Thomson: "Even at that time of the morning, there are usually a number of people out walking their dogs and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and who saw or heard anything out of the ordinary to get in touch with us." He said: "Our victim was walking up from the Willowbrae Road area towards his home and he had got into the garden when attention was drawn to movement behind him so he turned round and he saw an individual there.
A detailed forensic search of the scene is under way. He is a family man, well respected in the community and there is nothing untoward in his background at all Det Supt Allan JonesLothian and Borders Police
"That individual has discharged what we believe to be a shotgun at him at least twice and one of the rounds has struck the victim to the lower half of his waist.
"We do know that a silver car in an adjacent street was heard speeding off towards the Holy Cross High School area, that vehicle would be of interest to us and we would appeal to anyone for information who may have seen or heard that vehicle.
"He is a family man, well respected in the community and there is nothing untoward in his background at all.
"This is a normal part of his daily routine, walking his dog, and we have no identification to any fall-out with anyone but what we do know is its been specific and the gunman has clearly had lethal intent."
Although the sex of the attacker is still unknown Lothian and Borders Police know that the person was about 5ft 10in tall, wearing dark clothing, possibly a ski mask or balaclava.
