Police added that a section of Paisley Drive was closed and access to Parsons Green Primary School was restricted. Police tape also seals off Meadowfield Drive from Parsons Green Primary School for a few hundred feet.
Gregor Todd, who lives in the area, told BBC Scotland: "I feel just shock, total shock, it is unbelievable, I can't believe it, not round here.
"It is genuinely a quiet area so for something like this to happen is crazy."
Local Sharon Reekie, said: "It is very, very scary to be next to a primary school and to think the person could come back again is horrible.
"You don't expect it to happen in a place like this."
Lothian and Borders Police are due to hold a press conference at 1400 BST.
