SDLP Castlewellan Councillor Eamon O'Neill has expressed his condolences to the McMullan family.
He said: "This is a terrible tragedy that has left the whole community stunned and heartbroken.
"It is hard to believe that we've lost another precious young life on our roads in the greater Castlewellan area. My sympathies go out to the McMullan family and all John's friends at this awful time."
