Lady Thatcher to undergo surgery Lady Thatcher has surgery on arm
(1 day later)
Baroness Thatcher is to undergo routine surgery on Friday which means she will remain in hospital, where she has been since breaking her arm last Friday. Former prime minister Lady Thatcher is recovering after routine surgery and will remain in hospital until next week, her son Sir Mark has said.
She will undergo the procedure to insert a pin in order to assist the healing process. She has been in hospital since breaking her arm a week ago and had a pin inserted to assist the healing process.
The 83-year-old former prime minister was taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in central London on Friday after she fell and fractured her arm. Sir Mark said: "We are all absolutely delighted ... and also extremely relieved that it has gone so well."
Her son Sir Mark Thatcher had earlier said she was "doing well". Lady Thatcher, 83, is not expected to leave Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in central London for days, he said.
"Everybody's pleased. She's alert and talking about Lady's Day at Ascot and things like that," he said outside the hospital on Thursday morning. Sir Mark praised the medical team at the hospital for doing a "fantastic job".
Visitors to his mother were restricted to family and a couple of personal friends, he said. He added that his sister Carol had had an eye operation this week but had been able to visit on Thursday and was also very relieved about the outcome.
But Sir Mark added that his sister Carol had not visited the hospital because she had had an eye operation this week but had been in contact with him on a regular basis. Baroness Thatcher was British prime minister from 1979 to 1990

He said: "Depending upon how recovery goes generally I would hope my mother could go home at the earliest convenience but she wants to go home as early as possible - but then of course that's in the hands of the people charged with her aftercare."
He said his mother would "probably be going back to the ward this evening" after her operation.
