(31 minutes later) | |
A huge explosion has killed at least five people in the Pakistani city of Lahore, police say.
The blast, which took place near the city's main police station on the Mall Road, could be heard three to four miles away, an eyewitness said.
Pakistani television channel Dawn News showed pictures of a collapsed building and dozens of gutted cars.
Officials said at least 15 people were wounded. Rescue teams and ambulances have rushed to the area.
The blast was powerful enough to shear walls off buildings in the main business district of Lahore.
"It was a strong bomb blast," police spokesman Nayyab Haider was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.
"It damaged several buildings and cars and shattered widows."
The blast comes as the Pakistani army is battling militants in the Swat region in the north-west of the country in its most serious attempt to push back a growing Taleban insurgency.
