The court heard on the day of the robbery McDonald and Tyrell walked into the pub through the open back door.
The masked pair threatened to shoot two female cleaners and the couple who ran the pub.
McDonald then opened fire on Miss Johnson without warning as she approached with her police dog, Chaos.
Pc Johnson told the jury how she thought "my career was over, my life was over".
After the shooting McDonald handed himself in just under an hour later and was said to have told the arresting officer: "I have just shot one of your women."
Tyrell, of Lions Drive, Swinton, Greater Manchester, tried to avoid detection by hiding in a hole at a timber yard for more than 12 hours.
Judge Russell praised the policewoman: "She was faced with a most terrible situation with which she coped with admirable courage.
"It is clear that she loves her work and she loved working with her dog.
"She showed great bravery on the day of the robbery."
Miss Johnson has since returned to work at Lancashire Police.
