(30 minutes later)
A rescue operation is under way after a distress call from a fishing trawler which is in danger of sinking in the Irish Sea. A rescue is under way after a distress call from a trawler which was in danger of sinking in the Irish Sea.
Lifeboats have been launched from Kilkeel and the Isle of Man. A helicopter has been sent from Dublin and other vessels are also helping. The vessel's pumps could not cope when it began taking on water. Pumps were airlifted to the trawler and lifeboats helped in the operation.
The trawler in trouble is 19 miles south east of Kilkeel. Roy Teggarty of Kilkeel lifeboat said a skipper and two crew were on board. The incident began at about 1000 GMT on Monday, 19 miles south east of Kilkeel.
"The vessel is taking on water faster the her pumps can cope with," said a statement from Kilkeel lifeboat crew. "The situation seems to be under control at the moment," he said.
"It was quite a major operation for a while. The Warrenpoint ferry and other fishing vessels in the area were on stand-by for a time."
