Motorists are facing six mile tailbacks after a section of the M4 was closed in both directions after a car and lorry collided between Newport and Cardiff.
The M4 motorway between Newport and Cardiff has reopened almost five hours after a collision between a car and a lorry closed both carriageways.
Both drivers had injuries but they were not said to be life-threatening.
Tailbacks of up to six miles formed following the collision between J29 Castleton and J30 where the motorway meets the A48M.
The motorway is expected to be closed until 2200 GMT between J29 Castleton and J30 where the M4 meets the A48(M).
Both the male lorry driver and woman car driver were taken to hospital in Cardiff after the crash at 1410 GMT.
Gwent Police are urging motorists to take alternative routes. Meanwhile, a broken down lorry between junction 32 and 30 caused delays eastbound.
Police said their injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
Chief Inspector John Pavett said: "Both vehicles remain in the carriageway at the present time.
The accident happened on the westbound carriageway. It is thought there was damage to the central reservation and road surface.
"It is estimated that the recovery of the car and the lorry, which lost its load of metal poles, will take approximately three hours.
The motorway was reopened just after 1900 GMT following the removal of both the car and lorry, and a safety inspection.
"Once the lorry and the car have been recovered, South Wales Trunk Roads Agency will be examining the road and the barrier to assess the damage caused, what temporary repairs can be made and will be responsible for reopening the road only when it is safe to do so."
Traffic Wales said the delays caused by the closure were beginning to ease.
