Apart from the plane’s crew, cadets with the Kharkov National Air Force University were on board during the crash, the Ukrainian military said in a statement. While it did not give any exact figures, media reports suggested that there were around 20 cadets on the plane. The usual default crew for An-26 aircraft is a team of six persons. The local governor also added that, of the 28 people on board, seven were military officers and 21 were cadets with the Kharkov National Air Force University.
According to official figures, at least 20 men were killed in the crash, while unconfirmed reports put the figure even higher. Only two people, said to have had 90 percent of their bodies badly burned, have reportedly been hospitalized. Authorities have not yet commented on the possible reasons behind the crash, though local media have cited sources who said the plane crashed due to engine malfunction.
