Military aircraft crashes in north-eastern Ukraine, killing at least 22 (VIDEO)
(32 minutes later) | |
An An-26 military transport plane has crashed in Ukraine’s Kharkov region, the country’s military has confirmed. At least 22 onboard have reportedly been killed, and two badly burned survivors have been hospitalized.
The turboprop plane crashed late on Friday as it was about to land at an airfield outside the town of Chuguev. Footage from the scene shows the flaming aircraft lying by the side of a road.
Most of the plane has seemingly disintegrated upon impact and in the subsequent fire, disturbing imagery circulating online suggests. The tail section of the plane, however, remains largely intact.
Apart from the plane’s crew, cadets with the Kharkov National Air Force University were on board during the crash, the Ukrainian military said in a statement. While it did not give any exact figures, media reports suggested that there were around 20 cadets on the plane. The usual default crew for An-26 aircraft is a team of six persons.
According to official figures, at least 20 men were killed in the crash, while unconfirmed reports put the figure even higher. Only two people, said to have had 90 percent of their bodies badly burned, have reportedly been hospitalized. |
