Police said the child who died in the southbound accident on Thursday was believed to be under the age of five. It is thought the vehicle may have hit the central reservation between junctions 24 and 25 on Thursday.
The seven survivors were described as being in a critical condition in Musgrove Park Hospital. According to postings of condolence on a local website, they were travelling to a children's party in Dorset.
Two occupants had to be freed with hydraulic cutting equipment after the Scenic came off the road between the Huntworth and Blackbrook junctions. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The five-year-old boy is being treated in Frenchay Hospital in south Gloucestershire.
