Child dies in motorway collision Child dies in motorway collision
(about 8 hours later)
A child, thought to be under the age of five, has died in a crash on the M5 near Bridgwater in Somerset. A child was killed and seven people were badly injured when the car they were in careered off the M5 near Taunton and ended up in ditch.
Police say one vehicle - a people carrier - hit the central reservation at about 1840 GMT. It is thought the Renault Scenic may have hit the central reservation between junctions 24 and 25.
Seven more people thought to have been in the vehicle were taken to hospital. Their conditions were all said to be critical on Thursday evening. Police said the child who died in the southbound accident on Thursday was believed to be under the age of five.
The motorway was closed southbound between junctions 24 and 25 for up to four hours. The seven survivors were described as being in a critical condition in Musgrove Park Hospital.
A spokesman for Devon Fire and Rescue Service said the Renault Scenic People Carrier is thought to have struck the central reservation before careering into a roadside ditch. Two occupants had to be freed with hydraulic cutting equipment after the Scenic came off the road between the Huntworth and Blackbrook junctions.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened at about 1840 GMT.
