The married couple in their late 60s had been travelling northbound in a blue Vauxhall Meriva. John Gibson, 69, and his wife Isabella, 68, who had been married for 49 years, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their back seat passenger and the lone male occupant of the other vehicle involved, a black Vauxhall Astra Coupe, were taken to hospital in Dundee. The couple leave behind three children and four grandchildren. The family has said they will be missed terribly and thanked emergency services.
The driver of the Meriva was a 69-year-old man from Montrose, and his 68-year-old wife was in the front passenger seat. Their backseat passenger was a 78-year-old woman. She suffered serious leg, arm and hand injuries. Their back-seat passenger, a 78-year-old woman from Montrose, was taken to hospital with serious leg, arm and hand injuries.
The driver of the Astra, a 28-year-old man from Arbroath, suffered serious head injuries and multiple fractures. His condition is described as critical. 'Upsetting time'

They had married at Brechin Cathedral in 1959 and celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary last week.
The couple were known to be Scottish country dance fanatics and enjoyed caravanning.
Sons Malcolm, 48, and Kenneth, 47, said: 'We would like to thank everyone who has been in touch to offer their condolences at this very upsetting time. It is very much appreciated.
"Mum and dad will be missed terribly by the entire family and all of their friends, particularly those in their Scottish country dancing group.
"We would also like to thank members of the emergency services who assisted at the crash scene. They do an admirable job in very difficult circumstances.''
