The two people were trapped under rubble about midday on Monday, a Fire and Rescue NSW said. The temporary structure fell down at the Lachlan’s Line community precinct in Macquarie Park about 12.20pm on Monday.
One man was rescued from the Macquarie Park worksite and rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition about 1pm. A 55-year-old man with lower body injuries was freed by Fire and Rescue NSW workers and taken in a critical condition to Royal North Shore hospital about 1pm, authorities said.
Another man was pronounced dead at the scene before 3pm. But the younger worker, 18, who initially couldn’t be accessed by paramedics, was pronounced dead at the scene before 3pm.
Vision that appears to have been filmed shortly after the incident shows tonnes of steel, concrete and meshing strewn over the construction site. “The first [paramedics] to arrive at the scene found an absolute chaotic, emotionally charged scene,” New South Wales Ambulance Acting Superintendent Steve Vaughan told reporters on Monday.
Workers can be seen scurrying to safety as pieces of debris are heard falling to the ground in the vision, obtained by Nine News. “It took some time to ascertain exactly what had happened. There was a significant amount of scaffolding on the scene.”
Four Fire and Rescue crews, 10 ambulance crews and two helicopters responded to the scene. Video footage that appears to have been filmed shortly after the incident shows tonnes of steel, concrete and meshing strewn over the construction site.
