A major rescue operation is under way after scaffolding collapsed at a Sydney worksite, with one man pulled from the rubble and another still trapped. A worker has died and another has been critically injured after scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in Sydney.

A specialist rescue crew was deployed to the Macquarie Park worksite for a “delicate search operation”. One man was rescued from the Macquarie Park worksite and rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition about 1pm.

The spokesman said the people had been trapped by “a large amount” of scaffolding and concrete. Vision that appears to have been filmed shortly after the incident shows tonnes of steel, concrete and meshing strewn over the construction site.
One person was extracted after 1pm and taken to Royal North Shore hospital. Workers can be seen scurrying to safety as pieces of debris are heard falling to the ground in the vision, obtained by Nine News.

“Our immediate concern and focus is on the safety of our people and accounting for those who were in the vicinity of the accident, and ensuring the site is safely secured,” the spokesman said in a statement. “This is a tragic incident and our deepest sympathies go to the young man’s family, co-workers and friends,” a spokesman said in a statement.
“Another injured worker is receiving treatment in hospital and our thoughts and best wishes are with him. All others on site have been safely accounted for.”
NSW Police have established a crime scene and will prepare a report for the coroner.
