He was on a week-long organised trip when the alarm was raised at about 1500 GMT on Saturday on the River Usk, near Brecon, Powys. Officers say the circumstances are still being established.
Police are investigating what happened and have taped off two areas of the river about a mile east from Brecon. The alarm was raised on Saturday afternoon and Stewart was airlifted to hospital in Hereford, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
