£16,000 debt He told jurors, on his second day of evidence, that he repeatedly borrowed money from his colleague, James Dennis.
On Wednesday, on his first day of giving evidence in his defence, Mr Kohli told the court he had been a gambling addict. The jury has previously heard it amounted to about £16,000.
He said he had borrowed money from a colleague, James Dennis, whose wife, Carole, he was having an affair with. The defendant also claimed he was having an affair with Mr Dennis's wife, Carole, which she has denied in court.
The jury has heard that Mr Kohli borrowed about £16,000. Mr Kohli said that when Mr Dennis asked for the money to be returned, including a statutory demand from a solicitor, he threatened to make the affair public.
Mr Kohli told the court he had warned Mr Dennis that he would make the affair public if Mr Dennis demanded his money back. He told jurors that the day before Hannah disappeared, on 13 March 2003, Mr Dennis's brother, Jonathan, demanded Mr Kohli pay the money back.
Mrs Dennis has previously told the court she did not have an affair with Mr Kohli and had only met him on three occasions and never alone. Mr Kohli said that the next day, when Hannah vanished, he went to work as normal before going out for a meal with his wife and children in the evening.
On their return, he said he drove to the Mitre pub in the Portswood area of Southampton where he continued drinking.
'Scared and frightened'
When he left at closing time and returned to his van he was grabbed by two men who told him to get into the back of a dark-coloured car, he told the court.
One knelt on Mr Kohli's back and tied up his hands, a second sat on his legs while a third man drove the car, Mr Kohli said.
"The man who had his knee on my back tied my hands, they then blindfolded me.
"I was pleading saying 'I'm asthmatic and I can't breathe, I'm suffocating'.
"I just asked them what they want from me and they said 'It's best you keep listening to us'.
"I will never, ever forget the events of that night, I am still scared and frightened."
