Hymns could be heard inside the church as the private celebration of his life got under way on Thursday morning, with two men dressed in black standing guard outside the doors.
A handful of police in high-visibility jackets and an officer from Halton Borough Council remained outside the church while the service proceeded.
Mr Philcox's body was taken from the church to a nearby cemetery after the 45 minute service.
One mourner said: "It was a beautiful dignified service.
