"No-one is in immediate danger," a police spokesman told the BBC, adding that the school had been evacuated and that the gunman was "alone" inside. According to reports, explosive material was found on the body of the man, who had entered the school in Emsdetten at 0830GMT.
Police say the situation was under control and none of the injured are reported to be in a serious condition. He is reported to have been a former pupil of the school.
Germany witnessed a bloody school shooting in 2002, when a former pupil killed 18 people in his old school. While the situation appears resolved, it stirs unhappy memories of 2002, when a former pupil killed 18 people in his old school in eastern Germany.
A special police unit has surrounded the school and is trying to make contact with the masked man, who is reported to be a former pupil. A total of eight people are reported to have been wounded in this latest incident, although none seriously, police say.
The motive of the gunman as yet remains unclear.
