David Lederman QC, defending, told the jury the woman had written to Mr Williams expressing concern about her police statement.
The court heard the letter stated: "I felt pressured by both my family and the police. I worry that I made it up."
Mr Williams is accused of killing Miss Samuels and her children at their home in Thelwall Avenue, Fallowfield, by hitting them over the head with a 2lb (0.9kg) hammer.
