DUP plans SAS event at Stormont Parties clash on Stormont events
(about 3 hours later)
The DUP has said it plans to apply to reserve the Long Gallery at Stormont for an event to celebrate the role of the SAS during the Troubles. The Long Gallery at Stormont is at the centre of a row over plans by the DUP and Sinn Fein to hold rival commemorations there.
It comes days after it emerged Sinn Fein's Jennifer McCann planned an event to celebrate the life of IRA bomber Mairead Farrell in the same venue. The DUP wants to remember the role of the SAS during the Troubles while Sinn Fein wants to celebrate the life of IRA bomber Mairead Farrell.
Sinn Fein's plan was angrily opposed by both the DUP and Ulster Unionists. She was shot dead by the SAS in Gibraltar 20 years ago.
