The 36-year-old man from Falkirk was struck on the M9 near Bannockburn on Thursday night, Lothian and Borders Police confirmed. Central Scotland officers received a report of a man walking on the M9 near Plean at about 2000 GMT on Thursday.
Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact officers. When they arrived at the scene, the 36-year-old from Falkirk made off across the motorway into a field.
The accident happened at about 2045 GMT, about one mile east of junction nine at Bannockburn. While officers searched for him they received a report of the fatal collision. Lothian and Borders police have been brought in to investigate.
