A man who was forced into the sea by the rising tide had an "extremely lucky" escape when he happened to be spotted by an RNLI craft on exercise.

He had been walking from Knoll Beach on Studland towards Old Harry Rocks in Dorset when he became cut off.

The man had already been in the sea for about 45 minutes when he was seen by a crewman on the Poole Inshore lifeboat.

The RNLI said as the tide was just about to turn "for certain the young man would have been taken out to sea".

RNLI volunteer Glen Mallen said the man, who was rescued on Wednesday evening, was "extremely lucky that we were in the right place at the right time".

The charity recently launched its national drowning prevention campaign warning people that water can be "dangerously unpredictable".

The Respect the Water campaign aims to halve the number of drownings, currently at more than 200 annually, by 2024.
