Top Republicans ask Donald Trump to tone down his inflammatory speech toward Mexican immigrants
Version 0 of 1. The leaders of the Republican party are urging Donald Trump to cease his inflammatory comments on illegal immigrants. Chairman Reince Priebus, the head of the Republican National Committee, asked Mr Trump to tone down his hateful speech toward Mexican-American immigrants, the Washington Post first reported. Sean Spicer, chief strategist for the RNC, told the Post that Mr Priebus had a respectful phone conversation with the polarising candidate. “Chairman Priebus often speaks privately with candidates seeking our party’s nomination. He did have a very respectful conversation with Mr. Trump on Wednesday. They discussed multiple comments, including comments on illegal immigration.” During his first as a 2016 presidential candidate Mr Trump called Mexicans "drug dealers" and "rapists." He lost several business relationships and the Republican party has distanced themselves from the real-estate mogul turned GOP hopeful. However, the divisive Mr Trump refuted claims that the RNC leader attempted to change his rhetoric. Totally false reporting on my call with @Reince Priebus. He called me, ten minutes, said I hit a “nerve", doing well, end! Thomas M. Davis, a former Virginia congressman, told the New York Times that his fellow Republican is dominating the national press. "Trump is just dominating the race right now, he’s sucking the air out of this thing. Our candidates are all being forced to react to his comments.” As of Thursday, Mr Trump was leading the GOP for the first time in a new national poll by the Economist/YouGov. He led his competition accounting for 15 percent of voter support, 4 points ahead of Jeb Bush and Rand Paul. |
