Northern Rock cost put in figures
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/uk/7252026.stm Version 0 of 1. There are plenty of figures being bandied around in the coverage of the nationalisation of Northern Rock. The Times reckons that taxpayers face a £100m bill from city lawyers and bankers for what it calls the "failed auction" of the bank. The Daily Telegraph has the figure of £3,500 - the paper says that is the cost to every taxpayer in the country. For the Guardian, the focus is on thousands - the number of jobs it says will go at the bank. Bizarre performance The Sun asks of Mohamed Al Fayed's appearance at the Princess Diana inquest: "Is he off his Fayed?" "One of the most extraordinary performances ever seen in a British courtroom", says Daily Mail. The Independent invites its readers to try to guess which one of a list of 22 people and organisations was not blamed by the Harrods owner. The Daily Mirror calls it a bizarre five-hour performance, as he "savaged the Royal Family". Drink problems The Daily Telegraph says ministers are proposing that teenagers caught with an alcoholic drink could be prosecuted. The idea has raised concerns that a youngster found holding a can of beer could get a conviction, it says. The Daily Express reports that men who binge drink and smoke heavily while trying to start a family could pass on problems to their offspring. The researchers say their findings overturn assumptions that the health of fathers is less important than that of mothers. Beach ball The Times reports that tourists are flocking to Gretna Green to witness tens of thousands of starlings swooping for food. However, police are worried drivers are distracted by the spectacular sight. An animal from much further back in time is dubbed Frogzilla by the Daily Mail after a fossil was discovered on the island of Madagascar. The amphibian, which was around 70 million years ago, weighed 10lbs and resembled a squashed beach ball. |
