Seven people detained over an attack on the Israeli embassy in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, have been released, say court sources there.

The seven men, including two Tunisian nationals, were freed for "lack of proof", said Judge Ould Moustapha, according to the Associated Press.

They had been interrogated for 10 days, following the 1 February attack in which three French citizens were hurt.

It was the latest in a series of attacks blamed on Islamic extremists.

In December, four French tourists were killed by suspected Islamist militants in Aleg, about 250km (160 miles) east of the capital Nouakchott.

In the 1 February attack, bullets were fired at a nearby restaurant and nightclub as well as the Israeli embassy, witnesses said.

Mauritania is one of the few Arab League members to recognise Israel.
