A student accused of killing a man outside a Belfast nightclub has offered apologies to the victim's family.

Ciaran Laverty, 18, of Woodland Grange in the city, was charged at Belfast Magistrates Court with the manslaughter of Aaron Montgomery, 23.

A detective sergeant said he believed he could connect Mr Laverty, who said nothing when charged, with the offence.

A defence solicitor said he was "deeply sorry" and offered his "sincere apologies" to Mr Montgomery's family.

Aaron Montgomery from Danesford in Moira, Couty Down, was found outside Skye nightclub in Howard Street early in the early hours of Friday morning.

The News Letter marketing department employee had been on a St Valentine's night out with friends.

Mr Laverty was remanded on continuing bail to appear again next month.
